SPINNING YARNS

The Lithgow Tweed & Woollen Mills Story

Some of the items in the Lithgow Woollen Mills Collection

An exhibition of the Nationally Significant Lithgow Woollen Mills will be on display at the Lithgow Library from 18 Sept – 13 October. The Lithgow Woollen Mills operated for 150 years producing blanketing, clan tartans and military cloth for Australians at war during WWI, WWII and the Vietnam and Korea conflicts.

Visit this exciting exhibition before the end of term or encourage students to visit with their families during the holidays. This is a great pre-curser to PEEP AT SHEEP, An outreach program available from the Museum during term 4 from the Department of Primary Industries.

PEEP AT SHEEP is a classroom exhibition box about sheep and wool for lower primary students. Brimming with hands-on-goodies and fun activities.

In the box you will find a fleece, sheep skull, wool product samples, posters for display around the classroom covering topics such as wool processing, sheep breeds, wool history and amazing facts about wool. There is a puppet show focusing on the cooling and warming properties of wool which students can present to the class and a lovely story book about Timothy and Wobbly the Woolly Sheep.

The materials and activities contained in Peep at Sheep best support the implementation of NSW Department of Education & Training’s Stage 1, Growing and Changing Connected Outcome Group (COG). The kit can also be used to support the Products and Services COG.

Teachers are encouraged to give students a full overview of the cycles involved in producing wool by:

  • Visiting the SPINNING YARNS exhibition at the Library.
  • Borrowing PEEP AT SHEEP from the Museum
  • Visiting Megalong Valley Farm and Heritage Centre to explore changes in primary production from c1890 to present day.

On the Run

Daring Convict Escapes is a travelling exhibition from the State Library of NSW. The exhibition will be held at the end of term 4 and will feature convict irons and shackles from the Eskbank House & Museum collection along with a set of irons that were dug up at the Old Rydal Police Station. More information will be provided to teachers next term.
