Start living a healthier lifestyle now!

  • Eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit every day

What’s a serve?

One fruit serve is equal to;

  • 1 piece medium sized fruit eg. apple, orange, mango, banana or pear
  • 2 pieces of smaller fruit eg. apricots, plums or figs, about 8 strawberries, about 20 grapes or cherries
  • Dried fruit eg. 4 dried apricots or 1½ tablespoon sultanas
  • 1 cup diced pieces/canned fruit

One vegetable serve is equal to:

  • Starchy vegetables: 1 medium potato, ½ medium sweet potato, 1 medium parsnip.
  • Dark green leafy vegetables: ½ cup cabbage, spinach, , broccoli, cauliflower or brussel sprouts
  • Legumes and other vegetables: 1 cup lettuce or salad vegetables; ½ cup lentils, peas, green beans, tomatoes, capsicum, sweet corn, eggplant etc.

Be active for at least 30 minutes a day

How active do I have to be?

Aim to build up to 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. This means working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat, yet still being able to carry on a conversation.

Some suggestions!

  • Walking is a great way to get active. It’s easy, you can do it anywhere and its free!
  • If 30 minutes of activity seems too difficult, start with 5 minutes, 3 times a day and gradually build up the time and frequency until you can do 30 minutes!
  • These are also many other ways to get moderate physical activity: cycling, swimming, dancing, active gardening such as mowing or digging.
  • If you drive to the shops or work, look for the furthest parking spot from the entrance and walk the extra distance
  • Take your dog for a daily walk. Both your body and your dog will feel better for it!
